On January 22nd the annual Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship was held at Piedmont College Gymnasium. The attendance was higher this year. We had five boys and two girls compete in the contest. For those who aren’t familiar with the event, it is a competition to see who can make the most free throws. The athletes, boys and girls from ages 10 to 14, shoot fifteen free throws. Whoever makes the most is declared the winner in their respective age and gender division.

This year’s winners were:

  • Age 11 boys: Quentin
  • Age 12 boys: John
  • Age 13 boys: Carl
  • Age 11 girls: Anna
  • Age 12 girls: Elizabeth
  • Age 14 girls: Kelsey

The winners are eligible to go onto the district meet. Date and location TBA.

The winners of the district contest will be eligible to go to the statewide contest that will be held Sunday, March 20th at Phillips Arena. Winners at this level have the chance to compete at an international contest.

Special thanks go out to Chis Moore and Bill Hubbard for helping to organize this year’s event.

I am proud to be a part of this event which has been going on in the Knights since 1972. I remember shooting in it in my youth almost 30 years ago. I think I made 9 out of 15 and was feeling pretty good until another boy came in a sunk 13. This year the Knights also had a free throw contest for the adults won by Jaiker.
